How to Install Rubber Speed Humps

The 5 Steps of Rubber Speed Hump Installation

If you’re interested in installing rubber speed humps in your area, the process is relatively straightforward and can be accomplished in just five simple steps.
We break down what this process involves in our latest blog below.

Ideal Environments for Rubber Speed Humps

Rubber speed humps are ideal for a variety of applications, particularly in areas where traffic calming is a priority. These speed humps are perfect for:

  • residential neighbourhoods (including complexes and estates)
  • school zones
  • hospitals
  • factories and industrial sites
  • shopping centres
  • airports and aprons
  • parks
  • any other parking lots

These speed humps are designed to slow down vehicles and provide a safer environment for pedestrians and other motorists.

They are a great option for areas with strict noise regulations, as they are quieter than traditional asphalt speed humps. They are also durable and weather resistant, making them ideal for use in a range of different environments and climates.

Step 1: Determine the Location and Prepare the Surface

Determine the location of the speed hump and sweep the surface clean of debris or dust. Make sure that the selected space is clean of any dirt or oil.

Use chalk to draw the centre lines that run parallel and perpendicular to the street’s direction. Be sure to also mark out the border lines on the surface with the chalk.

Ensure no obstructions or debris can interfere with the installation process.

Step 2: Assemble and Position Units

Assemble and position the ramps, starting from the centre line, parallel to the direction of the street. Then place the end caps.

The speed hump should be placed with a distance of at least 3 meters between each hump and perpendicular to the direction of travel.

Step 3: Drill Holes and Install Shields

Drill 12mm diameter holes into the surface, through the existing holes of the placed units.

The holes should be about 120-140mm deep. Make sure the holes are cleaned and are clear of dust and debris after drilling and before installing the shields.
After each hole is drilled, insert a plastic shield to keep the units from shifting.

Step 4: Secure Rubber Speed Humps

One key step in the installation process is making sure speed humps are secure. This can be done with either bolts and washers or with spikes and epoxy.

Don’t cut corners on installation and take the time to properly secure the product while not excessively tightening to ensure safety and longevity.

Bolts and Washers

There are two different options for the kind of bolts used.

  1. Wedge Bolts – Use in concrete only. Install with a high-speed hammer drill with a 7/16′” masonry bit, and an impact wrench or heavy ratchet with a 3/4″ socket.
  2. Lag Bolts and Anchors – for tar, asphalt or concrete. Install with a high-speed hammer drill with a 3/4″ masonry bit and an impact wrench or heavy ratchet with a 3/4″ socket.

If you are using anchors, then insert them in each hole and tap with a hammer until flush with the surface. Then place the speed hump so bolt holes sit directly above drilled pavement holes.

For either kind of bolt use, insert each bolt with its corresponding washer through the designated holes. Once they are all in place, begin tightening them by hand starting until they are 3/4 of the way submerged. Start at the middle point of the speed hump and work outward. Finally, return to each bolt hole and use the appropriate tool to tighten them until they are snug. Do not over-tighten.

If you like, you can choose to add epoxy to the underside of the speed humps for additional durability and stability. The benefit of using anchor bolts, plugs, and epoxy is that it helps to securely attach the speed humps to the road surface for an extended period, with significantly more strength.

Step 5: Test the Speed Humps

After the installation is complete, test the speed humps to ensure they are properly installed. Drive a vehicle over the speed humps at a slow speed to confirm they are secure and do not move.
